How can whiplash occur?1) How whiplash occurs

Whiplash occurs when you are rear-ended in an auto collision. This causes the head into a backward motion (extension) and then a forward motion (flexion) causing the neck joints to become injured along with the overstretching of the muscles and ligaments.

2) Whiplash can occur at lower speeds

Believe it. Research has shown in impacts at only 2.5 mph, 29% of those people had symptoms of whiplash. The research also showed that at 10 mph, the impact can cause up to 9 Gs of force in the neck. At 9 Gs, your head would equal 90 pounds.

3) Symptoms may not be immediate and can be more than just neck and shoulder pain

Whiplash symptoms may be immediate or can begin developing hours, days or even months later. The many symptoms include neck swelling, muscle spasms, headaches, nausea, dizziness, blurred vision, difficulty swallowing, and/or tingling or numbness in the arms.

4) Straightening of the cervical curve is a common X-ray finding

Due to the advancements made in seats and headrests, the number of serious head and neck injuries have declined. However, muscle spasms can cause the straightening of the cervical spine which is indicative of whiplash.

5) Chiropractic treatment can help

Of the one million people involved in collisions who suffer from whiplash injuries, 10% continue to have chronic pain. Chiropractors are specialized in the diagnosing and treating of whiplash injuries. The chiropractor will perform a thorough physical and history, may order images, provide treatment, and teach you how to care for your injuries at home.
